Ryan had a spectacular 2005 season. He converted 36 out of 41 save opportunities with an ERA of 2.43. He appeared in the 2005 All Star game for the Orioles. He signed a 5 year contract with the Blue Jays for $47 million. This made him the highest paid reliever in baseball surpassing Mariano Rivera.

The Blue Jays made Ryan the highest paid relief pitcher in baseball. He performed as an All Star in the first season. He missed the second season and did well in year three. Then it ended. He was released in year 4. The Blue Jays paid $47 million to a reliever who pitched for only two seasons. They gave a record setting contract to a reliever with one good season in his resume. His unusual delivery motion had several scouts concerned that he could be more susceptible to injury and they proved correct.
