In the beginning of 2016, the Pirates extended the contract of Gregory Polanco to add 5 years at a total of $35 million. In 2016, he had a career high of 22 home runs and 86 RBIs.
Starting in 2017, the Pirates saw those numbers one more time. In 2018 he hit 23 home runs with 81 RBIs. Other than that one season, he never hit more than 11 home runs with a high of 36 RBIs.
The Pirates paid $35 for 5 years but 4 of those seasons he averaged less than 9 home runs a year with 27 RBIs. It seems any AAA player could have produced as much for far less money.
