At the beginning of 2007, the Orioles signed Baez to work in the bullpen. In the first year he was 0-6 with a 6.44 ERA. He did manage to get three saves. Tommy John surgery required him to miss all of the second season. He returned in 2009, pitched in middle relief. His statistics showed that his record was 4-6 with a 4.02 ERA.
How does one evaluate a middle reliever? He only had 3 saves. He only pitched 2 of the 3 years. His ERA was always over 4.00.
